Transco and St Albans Road

The next few months will see major traffic problems in Watford as Transco (the Gas Board) digs up the St Albans Road to replace it's gas main.
Transco have the legal right to do this work for safety reasons and it is not the responsibility of the County Council or Borough Council.
It is bound to lead to more rat running and congestion and Herts Highways have had to postpone maintenance and improvement work around the town to minimise inconvenience during this period.

The construction of the third and final phase of the St Albans Road Green Route took place between mid February 1999 and early September 1999. The work consisted of Green Route at the Garston Lane junction and between Buckingham Road and Brixton Rd together with major structural maintenance work between Balmoral Road and Lowestoft Road.

The works were originally scheduled to last three and a half months but significant delays were associated with the maintenance work. The temporary closure of St Albans Road to southbound traffic was a direct consequence of the maintenance work. Due to the very poor condition at that time, of the section of road between Balmoral Road and Lowestoft Road, the required maintenance work involved the reconstruction of the full depth of the road, not just the surface layers. This was undertaken using a process which
recycled the underlying layers of the road construction before applying new surface layers.

Unfortunately, the disruption and vibration associated with the repair of the road led to a number of problems with underlying services, in some instances resulting in leaks. In particular a gas main which runs through this section of St Albans Road was found to be in a very fragile condition
and in some areas was found to be much closer to the surface than expected. As a result many localised repairs were required before the carriageway maintenance works could be completed in full, causing delay to the original programme.

Transco's imminent gas supply renewal and reinforcement work is part of a much larger programme of work, running from the Dome Roundabout to the Penn Road (Homebase)junction. It may be that the problems experienced five years ago heightened the demand for the latest package of renewal works.
